Been another busy week here at WPLift HQ – I’ve started work designing a theme for another CMS – gasp! Makes a change for me and a new challenge which I’m enjoying.
Pay What You Can for WordPress Maintenance – A Discussion

In a few weeks, my wife will be giving birth to our first daughter, which we’re both very excited about. In an ideal world, we’d both be self-employed and be able to spend all day, every day with her. While that doesn’t seem feasible at the moment, my entrepreneurial side has come up with an idea that might help to make that happen.

Curating Content for a WordPress Blog (How I Do It)

If you’re a regular reader of the ManageWP blog then you know that my last couple of posts have either been about creating or curating content for a WordPress blog.

https://managewp.com/wordpress-content-curation

WordPress For Rapid Application Development

Last week, I talked about using WordPress as an application platform – once again, even – but Ted Waller brought up an interesting comment that I’ve not heard (at least here on this blog) that I wanted to discuss a bit more.

How Tony Perez of Sucuri Sets Up His Own Security

This is a guest post by Tony Perez, the COO at Sucuri Sucuri, the provider of choice of WordPress information security, and WP Engine partner. Tony specializes in malware detection, incident handling, and log analysis.

Making Translation a Priority

It’s quite amazing how many users will volunteer to translate your theme or plugin. In our case, we get new propositions every week.

The Most Exciting Feature of WordPress 3.6: Native Audio and Video Support

The upcoming WordPress 3.6 release will add native support for audio and video files. This one is a real game changer. We’re going to give you a full introduction to the new capabilities and show you how you can use them on your WordPress site.

Ghost is Looking To Hit Stretch Goal

By now you’ve heard that Ghost was fully funded in less than one day via Kickstarter, which is an incredible accomplishment! If you haven’t heard of Ghost yet you should familiarize yourself with it, as it appears to be a potentially strong competitor to WordPress.

Giveaway: Celebrating 1,000 Blog Posts!

Deploying With Git

I’ve been banging my head on this for a while. It really did take me a year and reading lots of things to begin to understand that I was totally wrong. As with many things, I have to sit down and use them for a while to understand what I’m doing wrong, and what I need to learn.

Tutorials and How-Tos

How to Modify the Parent Theme Behavior Within the Child Theme

What are child themes? Child themes are a useful WordPress feature that allows developers to build a new template without starting from scratch, but by taking advantage of all the features already available in an existing theme.

http://wp.tutsplus.com/tutorials/creative-coding/how-to-modify-the-parent-theme-behavior-within-the-child-theme/

Guide to Creating Your Own WordPress Editor Buttons

Most likely you know that WordPress is bundled with the HTML WYSIWYG editor, TinyMCE. The variety of features, and the ability to be extended though plugins, make it the most used WYSIWYG editor in the world.

How To Programmatically Populate a WordPress Template

The title of this post is somewhat misleading as I’m not actually sharing how to programmatically populate a WordPress template – instead, I’m walking through the process of populating a page that also has a page template applied to it.

Custom post type and metadata support in the REST API

We’ve recently made some updates to the REST API which is available here on WordPress.com and for any Jetpack-enabled site that have the REST API module activated. The API now has full read and write support for custom post types and post metadata.

http://developer.wordpress.com/2013/04/26/custom-post-type-and-metadata-support-in-the-rest-api/

How to Simplify the WordPress Admin for Your Clients

When we develop sites for clients, sometimes it makes sense to remove some of the UI items they don’t need in the admin area to make it less intimidating. We used many of these admin customizations with WordPress Multisite (or WPMU), to make our customer’s sites more user-friendly.

How To Ban A WordPress User

I was asked a few days ago to create a system would ban a WordPress user from an install. So I created a simple plugin and I wanted to share with you the basics of this plugin.

http://www.wpexplorer.com/how-to-ban-a-wordpress-user/

How to Make a Command Line for Your WordPress Site

I devised a solution to quench my thirst for more WordPress power: a simple in-house plugin that adds a command line to the back-end. And in this post, I’m going to show you how to make it.

http://wpmu.org/wordpress-command-line/

How To Quickly Duplicate A WordPress Database

There are many situations where you may need to copy your WordPress database. The most common scenario would be to set up a development site in order to test new themes or features.

http://wpmu.org/copy-wordpress-database/

Resources & Freebies

15 of the Latest Free & Premium WordPress Content Slider Plugins for 2013

WordPress sliders are one of the most popular features for many WordPress users. They add an undeniable element of style and flare to many web designs and help draw site visitor’s attention to specific pieces of content.

How-To: Create a Free Newsroom for Multi-Author WordPress Blogs

In today’s post I’m going to highlight four of the best tools available for a growing multi-author blog.

The WPLift Complete Guide to Google Authorship and WordPress

Since the feature debuted (I believe in the spring of 2012) acquiring Google Authorship for your WordPress website has become a lot easier and a lot less confusing. That is, if you can avoid the old articles out there that make it insanely complicated. Which is why for today’s post I’m going to attempt to cut out all of the unnecessary over complications still floating around on this topic and give you a complete (but to the point) guide on Google Authorship and WordPress.

Categories allow website owners to sort their content while making it easier for their users to browse the site. At WPBeginner we use different categories to sort content on our site. For example, when a user arrives on our site, they can go directly to the beginners guide section or WordPress tutorials. Doing so they will be able to skip posts in our other categories. Sometimes you may want your users to be able to search inside a specific category rather than the entire site. In the past, we wrote an article about how to create an advanced search form for custom post types, and a lot of you asked if there was a way to do the same thing for categories. In this article we will show you how to add search by category functionality in your WordPress site. The goal is to add a search box that allows visitors to search inside specific categories.

First thing you need to do is install and activate the Search by Category plugin. Upon activation, this plugin will add a new options page under Settings » Search by Category.

On the settings page, you can choose which categories to exclude from the search box. Leaving all categories unchecked will show all your categories in the drop down menu. While you are there, you may want to uncheck the option to use this plugin’s styling for your search form. Once you are done with the settings click on save changes.

There are two ways that you can use to display the category search box on your website. First method is by using a widget area or sidebar. Go to Appearance » Widgets. Add a new text widget to your sidebar and paste the following shortcode inside your text widget:

[sbc]

The other method is by doing it with template tag. If you are comfortable working with theme code, then you can also use the following template tag inside your theme to display the search box:

<?php if(function_exists('sbc')){
    sbc();
} else { ?>
    // Your regular form code goes here
<?php } ?>

Search by category plugin allows you to exclude categories from your search results, but you can also exclude pages from WordPress search results. Remember that this search by category plugin will only be helpful if you are using categories and tags the right way. We hope this article help you improve your site search by adding search by category feature in WordPress. We are curious to know how many of you still use default WordPress search box on your websites? How many of you are using something advanced like custom post type search, search by category, google custom search, Amazon CloudSearch with Lift, etc?
Managing WordPress website with multiple authors can be complicated sometimes. There are plugins to manage editorial workflow, but you may come across situations where you need specific solutions for better control of your WordPress site. Recently, we helped a user find such a solution. They wanted to block WordPress post updates and deletion after a set period of time for all users (including editors) after a set period of time. For example, if a published post is 30 days or older, then it cannot be edited or deleted by editors. Only administrators can modify that post. In this article, we will show you how to block post edit, updates, and deletion after a set period of time in WordPress.

All you need to do is add the following code in your theme’s functions.php file or in a site-specific plugin.

function wpbeginner_restrict_editing( $  allcaps, $  cap, $  args ) {

    // Bail out if we're not asking to edit or delete a post ...
    if( 'edit_post' != $  args[0] && 'delete_post' != $  args[0]
      // ... or user is admin
      || !empty( $  allcaps['manage_options'] )
      // ... or user already cannot edit the post
      || empty( $  allcaps['edit_posts'] ) )
        return $  allcaps;

    // Load the post data:
    $  post = get_post( $  args[2] );

    // Bail out if the post isn't published:
    if( 'publish' != $  post->post_status )
        return $  allcaps;

    //if post is older than 30 days. Change it to meet your needs
    if( strtotime( $  post->post_date ) < strtotime( '-30 day' ) ) {
        //Then disallow editing.
        $  allcaps[$  cap[0]] = FALSE;
    }
    return $  allcaps;
}
add_filter( 'user_has_cap', 'wpbeginner_restrict_editing', 10, 3 );

This function checks if the user has the capability to edit or delete posts. After that it checks for the post status. If a post is published and is older than 30 days, then user’s capability to edit and delete the post is taken away. If a post is published, but it is not older than 30 days, then the users with the ability to edit posts can still edit it. Note: Administrators can edit and delete posts anytime they want.

We hope that this article helped anyone who is looking to block post edit, update and deletion in WordPress after a set period of time. Would you ever do this on your site? What use cases can you see for something like this? Let us know in the comments below.

Skype has become a go-to communication tool in many small businesses. At WPBeginner, we use Skype to communicate with team members as well as clients. Larger companies show their toll-free phone number that their users can use to call them. Others show live chat options for support. What if you are just starting out and want to provide your users with an ability to call or chat with you directly from your website? Well, Skype can be a perfect tool for that. In this article, we will show you how to show your Skype contact and Skype status in WordPress, so your users can contact you directly via Skype.

First thing you need to do is install and activate the Neat Skype Status plugin. Upon activation, go to the settings page (Settings » Neat Skype Status) where you will need to provide your Skype ID and save settings.

Now open the Skype application in your computer and sign in with your ID. In the Skype menu bar, click on Tools » Options. In the options dialog box click on the Privacy tab and check the box next to the line “Allow my online status to be shown on the web“. You may also want to check Allow IMs from anyone if you don’t want to approve each user you want to talk with (personal preference).

Once you are done updating the privacy settings, come back to your website’s admin area and go to Appearance » Widgets. Drag and drop Neat Skype Status v1 widget to your sidebar and save it. You will also notice that there is another Neat Skype Status v2 widget, but that is actually a demo of the plugin’s premium version, so don’t use that. Once you have saved the widget, you can now preview it on your website.

There are a number of options that you can configure for the plugin. For example you can choose from a number of button styles and icons. You can increase or decrease the refresh interval. Lastly, instead of a widget you can add a floating Skype button that scrolls down when your users scroll down the page.

We hope that this article helped you add your Skype contact and Skype status in WordPress. You can definitely use this to connect with people through your WordPress website and Skype. This status button will give your website users the confidence that there are real people behind the website. We have seen numerous folks use Skype or Google Talk on their website. What are your thoughts on using a service like this to connect with your readers? Let us know in the comments below.
